"At the close of the spring meeting in May it was apparent to the present holders of the stock that ere another meeting certain changes in tho management would be necessary, and accordingly Colonel W. E. Applegate submitted to Mayor Grainger a proposition to tako tho presidency of the organization at a.salary of $"i,C03 per year. 1 "Subsequently Charles F. Price, who made racing so popular in Louisville during his regime as secretary, announced, his resignation as general manager of the California Jockey Club. Then it was whispered that there was a possibility of his going back to Louisville. In answer to this rumor Judge Price said while in tho stand at the Latonia spring meeting that no propositions had been made to him with tnat end in view. "A few days prior to the opening of tho Saratoga meeting Judge Price was in Cincinnati on his way to the great eastern resort, but at that time ho said there was nothing now in tho situation at Louisville so far as he was aware. "A few days ago Mayor Grainger joined Judge Price at Saratoga. Tho information now iB that Mayor Grainger has declined the proposition mado by Colonel Applegato and is urging tho consummation of the deal now on foot. "Friends of Judge Price have subscribed 0,000, and Mr. Bell hasagreod to put up whatever balance may bo necessary to put the management of the organization in the hands of Judge Price. "If the deal goes through, Matt Winn, of Louisville, will in all probability be the secretary."
