President was also spoedy and easily the best of the others. Melbourne Eclipse ran his race and was doing his best at the end. John Carney got off Soorly, was crowded all the way and could not improve his position. Mayme showed early speed. Murmur finished strongly. At post 4 minutes. Start good. Won driving: second the same. Carrie I. was best. She, Vituria and Insolence were cut off at the start, but she caught H. S. Tobacco on the far turn, raced him into submission and had enough left to stall off Junaetta. The latter ran in much improved form, camo with a rush in the stretch and was pressing the winner hard at the end. Mr. Clay ran a good race and hung on gamely all the way. Concertina showed but little speed and had no mishaps. Easy Street ran a good race, met with interference all the way and finished strongly when clear. Scratched 34179 Princess Otillie, 102. Velma Clark showed the most speed throughout and was never fully extended. Annie Thompson was well in motion at the start, but seemed to prop and did not get fully in her stride until on the stretch turn. She tried to run out on both turns. Johnson was of no assistance to Annie Lauretta when it came to a drive with Annie Thompson. Candling and Andes were cut off and thrown out of it just after the start. Won easily; second the same. Imperialist came away after taking the last jump, won as his rider pleased and was beautifully handled. Pretty Rosie ran a great race and was much the best of the others. He lost his rider in attempting a jump before the start and ran away about two miles through the field. Sir Ellerslie trailed his field until near the last two obstacles. He passed Urganda when the latter struck the seventh jump. Boojum refused the first jump and ran out of the course. Scratched 3457l3McManus, 142 ; 34402 Brandy wine, 125. No show betting. Obstinate Simon trailed his field for the first six furlongs, moved up to Handcuff on the far turn and after racing him into submission camo away with something in reserve. Cast Iron finished strongly and caught Handcuff tiring in the last furlong. The latter was worn out setting the pace and faltered in the closing strides.
