THE OPENING AT BUFFALO. Buffalo, N. Y., August 30. Green B. Morris captured the first running of tho Buffalo Derby at the new course at Kenilworth Park this afternoon with his high-class three-year-old Sombrero. He was ridden by Minder and made a runaway race of it, winning as he pleased by four lengths from Circus after being eased up all the last sixteenth. The race was run before a crowd of about 10,000. The weather was all that could ba desired and society turned out in force. It was an auspicious opening for the new club and, with proper management, the meeting hero is sure to be a success. Tho track is far from being completed, but tho crowd was a good natured one and overlooked many of the little details that are still in a crude state. The course will not be teen at its best until next spring. Some of the officials wore evidently new to their positions and apparently got rattled, for in the opening event Golden Rule, which was only beaten out a head by Shrine, was completely overlooked. The official placing the race gave second money to Artris, whilo Sevoy, which was beaten off three lengths for third money, was placed third. Fortunately but few among the vast throng noticed the mistake and the incident was passed by unnoticed. It is to be hoped that- mistakes of this kind will not occur too frequently as it would re sult in a lot of dissatisfaction and hurt the success of tho new venture. ."fla Yj6 utna bK? on in ho bi "ng outside of the field books and the pencilers took advantage of the small number doing business and some of the books were as tight as those in a syndicate ring. Following is a list of those who quoted the odds: W. Shannon R. Tucker. J. Lysight, B. Falk, R. Uc!Uhmn J Bl ResPess, H. Gerhardy, W. Rowan and F. Slocum. Three of the books are controlled by horsemen, which is a bad feature. Speculation was brisk, and it appeared as if there was enough business for several more books. Sombrero simply outclassed his field-the race proved little more than an exercise gallop for him. JLhe real struggle in tho race was for second place Crimean was Sombreros closest attendant until in the last quarter when he commenced to tire, and in the run home there was a general shifting of positions back of the leader. Homestead moved and at the furlong post it seemed that tho up Morris stable would run one two. In the final fur-lonr, however. Circus shot out of the field and finishing strongly passed all but the winner, and at the end was an easy second. The time, 2. -39, although slow was good for the track. A number of horses stumbled in the different racei, as the track was full of holes. It will improve as the meeting progresses and will eventualls-ba Tsry last.
