GOSSIP OF THE TURF. After Sir Voorhies had been scratched from the Futurity field, leaving the Haggin colors unrepresented in the great race, a number of friends in the paddock started to console John Mackey, who for so many years has managed the Rancho del Paso stud farm for J. B. Haggin. But the white-haired Californian "stumped" all hands by assuring them thataHaggin-bred youngster would win just the same. Pointing to the white-footed bay colt Savable, he said: "Now, theres a colt much like his daddy, except in color. He is going to avenge Salvators defeat by Proctor Knott, mark my words. I am not often so positive, boys, but this colt is one of the best I ever brought east from Del Paso, yet ho sold for a song, almost." It was JohnMackeys first Futurity. In all the years of this famous stakes history he never saw the race run, business claiming his attention at home. But this year he felt so confident of the success of a Haggin-bred youngster that he made it a point to be on hand, as noted, and there was not a better pleased man on the track than he. The success of Savable will give future sales of Rancho del Paso yearlings a great boom. His merit and that of other graduates of his famous birthplace show that no reservations are made by Messrs. Haggin and Mackey with their yearlings. Any buyer is just as apt to obtain a prize for hundreds as if he gave thousands instead. Twelve head of yearlings, the property of James R. Keene, were shipped from his Castleton stud to New York Thursday. They will be transferred to the Red Bank, N. J., farm, where the Keene youngsters are broken and tried out. This is the last batch of yearlings which will be shipped from Castleton, as the rest of the yearling crop has already been sent to Red Bank. The star of the lot is thought to be the Ben Brush colt, half-brother to Tragedian.
