LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. The finish in the Chicago Ridge handicap was one of the closest witnessed during the current meeting and reflects groat credit on Secretary Jaspers ability as a weight adjuster. There will be an auction sale in the paddock at Worth before the racing begins on Saturday when the following horses, the property of various owners, will be off ered : King Barleycorn, Limelight. Silurian, Merops, The Don, Knightbanneret, Leo Newell and Filly Deck. King Pepper was heavily backed by his stable and its followers, they figuring that if King Pepper was good enough to defeat Golden Rule in the mud which is decidedly unfavorable going to the Kantaka horse, he should prove an easy victor on a dry track. King Pepper set a very fast pace for the first four and one-half furlongs and was going steadily when he suddenly faltered and seemingly tried to stop. The reason was apparent when the horse returned to the stand as be was quite lame, evidently having met with the mishap before trying to quit. Jockey Coburn was again in ovidence yesterday and easily carried off the riding honors as out of four mounts he landed three winners and one third. Two of tho winners, Au Revoir and Herodiade, came from the stable of his contract employer, G. C. Bennett. The Worth record for five furlongs was yesterday lowered in the fifth race by Golden Rule and the new mark set at 58. This is within two-fifths of a second of the American record for a circular course made by George F. Smith, as a four-yeaf-old, carrying ICO pounds, on the Bay District track, San Francisco, March 7, 1895. E. J. Arnold fe Co. are reported as having won a large sum by the victory of their entry, Bossie McCarthy, in the third race.
