LOOAL TURF GOSSIP. J. C. Gray, who trains for H. J. Scoggan, purchased Glenrice from his employer before the first race yesterday. The filly had little trouble in landing the purse for her new owner. Jockey Wilkerson, who rode Musical Slipper in the fifth race, was fined 5 by the judges for interfering with Our Bessie while rounding the stretch bend. Jockey Bobbins rode four winners yesterday, tieing Coburns record for number of wins in one day on local tracks this year. Jockeys Tadlock and E. Hayes were suspended yesterday for the remainder of the meeting by the starter for incompetency at the post. The announcement that Starter Dwyer has been engaged to do the starting at New Orleans was a little premature, as no definite word has reached Mr. Dwyer from C. S. Bush, the president and general manager of the Crescent City Jockey Club, to that effect. Overtures have been made to Mr. Dwyer to handle the flag at New Orleans for the first month, and apparently everything was favorable to his leaving for the Crescent City at the conclusion of the Lakeside meeting. But word reached Mr. Dwyer not long ago that Chris Fitzgerald was rapidly recovering from his illness and would, in j all probability, be sufficiently in health to resume his position on the opening day. As the matter now stands Mr. Dwyer does not know whether he is to start during the first month at New Orleans or not.
