LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. Whiskey King, recently purchased by C. A. Johnson for ,000, ran far below expectations and finished an indifferent third in a field composed of horses of mediocre class. Jaubert, the winner, was thought of so lightly this spring by his former owner, M. H. Tichenor. that he gave him away to Clint DeWitt. It was common rumor before the race that Whiskey King had not been worked more than a half mile since leaving New York, Under the circumstances it is little wonder that he was so badly beaten. J. J. McCafferty arrived yesterday from New York and was among the visitors at Lakeside. The well-known owner stated that he has sold out the majority of horses he has had in training during the past season and after a short stay in Chicago will leave for Kentucky, where he will inspect a number of yearlings with a view to making liberal purchases. H. N. McTyeiro sold to T. Dougherty, for a reported price of ,500, the frequent winner Mattie Spencer. The horses Haydon, Tom Collins and Braw Lad will in future be barred from starting at Lakeside on account of their bad acting at the post. J. O. Keene, the owner of Braw Lad, will ship the horse, at the close of the Lakeside meeting, to Lexington, Ky., where he will be retired to the stud. t The judges announced yesterday that in future the entry of George Arab would not be accepted. Harry White will be at Lakeside to receive entries from horsemen to the stakes to be decided at New Orleans and which will cIobo Saturday.
