j . i I j ; j J ? 3 3 GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Tho Sire stable, in charge of "Counselor Bill" Brian, was moyed last Tuesday from Morristown, N. J., to the Morris Park track. In the lot were Ancko, tho Ally by Locohatcheo Harlem, purchased from Pierre Lorillard, and tho colt Attorney, by Albert Lady Useful, purchased from P.J. Dwyor last season. Both of these three-year-olds show considerable improvement, which, if carried out in races, will make them decidedly useful in tho "lemon, black stripes" of tho Siro stable. Besides these two promising three-year-olds there are six two-yoar-olds, mostly by Top Gallant and Plaudit. Tho entire string has been wintered at Morristown. It is Mr. Sires intention to have th horses roady for early racing, and trainer Brion will have them doing useful work as soon as tho tracks are in any kind of condition to gallop over. Loyal S., a shifty gelding that has won over tho jnmps and on the flat for V, Gilbert, met h?s death at tho Oakland track in a peculiar way a few days ago. Ho was striding along and boring down with his head, as horses often do when taking their morning gallops, and was about to pass a filly that was being pullod up, when sho wheeled, let fly with both heels and caught Gilberts horso an awful crack on tho head. Loyal S. had won seven or eight races since the fall. While playing in the paddock at Mr. Lynos Larchmont Stud several days ago, William Hale, a promising throe-year-old colt belonging to Charles Head Smith was so badly injured that it will be a long timo before ho can be trained, if over. The colt, in rearing and plunging, got his foot caught in tho prongs of a low growing tree, and in attempting to oxtricato himself, he almost tore himself to pieces, straining his knee and shouldor vary badly. Trainers at Gravosend and Sheepshead Bay have had tho horses out on the tracks and tho Coney Island boulevard during the last few days. L, Y. Bells Hormis, which received top weight in the Brighton Handicap, took a gallop on the Sheepshead Bay track Monday morning in spite of tho fact that tho course was covered with snow. Hormis appeared to bo in grand condition and looked as if he could break loose from his rider at any moment. O. H. Chenault, Spendthrift Stud, hajs the largest number of daughters of the dead SpendthrlftrSf any breeder, ho now owning nine mares by tho siro of Kingston, Hastings and Lamplighter, The Spendthrift maros have como into unusual prominence in "the last year, bwing to tho brilliant achiovoments of the good Hermis, L. V. Bells colt, being out of a daughter of this horse. The good filly Eva Russell is also out of a Spendthrift maro, as is Tillb, which beat Ornamont in tho Suburban Handicap of 1898. In the estimation of competent judges, Edward Corrigan has tho strongest stable in tho west. Ho has thirty-six two-year-olds, twenty-six Amorican-5. brod threo year-olds and these English-bred horses of tho all-aged division : Scintillant II., Fancy Man, Sir Hercules, Marta Santa, Planudes, Western Duke, Stratton, Rosa Tree, LEtrenne, Layia, Ju-5 dicions, Samper Vigilans, McGee, Ravol, Ormicant, Mons do lOrmo and Cactus.
