NOTES OF THE TURF. Wesley Fields has named his two-year-old filly, by Victory Mertie Reed, by Cavalior, Mable Reed, she is a sister to the much-talked-of Lom Reed, now in the stable of Gorman and Bauer, and is a good looker, with, all the earmarks of stake class. She is the second foal of her noted dam, which mare has the distinction of having defeated in a race the wonderful Imp. Cloister, a noted English steeplechaser, is dead. He was inbred to Touchstone and Venison and began his .racing career as a four-year-old. In 1893 ho won the Grand National, with 175 pounds up, covering the distance, four Miles and 856 yards, in the romarkably fast time of 9 minutes 42 2-5 seconds, a record that has never been equaled. The Earl of Carnarvon, a well-known patron of the English turf, has arrived in this country on a pleasure tour. He is the owner of Baldnr,; winner of the Ascot Btakes last year; Manhezin, winner of thel Stewards I: Cupat Goodwood, and Solicitor, which was a disappointing favorite in the Lincolnshire Handicap.
