WORK FOR HERMIS. L. V. Bell has mapped out an unusually hard campaign for his much-talked-of four-year-old colt Hermis. Mr. Bell, through his trainer, J. H. McCormick, has nominated Hermis for the Carter Handicap at Aqueduct, the Excelsior Handicap at Jamaica, the Metropolitan Handicap at Morris Park, the Brooklyn Handicap at Gravesend, the Suburban Handicap at Sheepshead Bay and the Brighton Handicap at Brighton Beach. "In each of these events the famous son of Her-mence Katy of the West will be asked to take up top weight. Trainer McCormick says if the colt gets into proper condition in time he will start him at Aqueduct and then barring accidents will fit him to meet all of these engagements. According to McCormick, Hermis has wintered exceptionally well and is ready now to takeupahardcourse of training as soon as the weather permits. Mr. Bell also has nominated Francesco for all" of these handicaps for the reason that the St. Maxim colt finished last season In splendid condition and gives promise of a big improvement in form as soon as McCormick gets him ready to go to the post. The last engagement of Hermis is the Excelsior Handicap, which is the Metropolitan Jockey Clubs opening attraction at Jamaica. The Excelsior, with ,000 added, is particularly attractive, coming as it does before the running of the other rich handicaps, and indications point to a high class field from the list of nominations. Alex Shields has the largest number of entries, having named Prince of Melbourne, Advance Guard, Andy Williams, Hunter Raine. and Zoroaster. The fact that August Belmont, W. C. Whitney, James R. Keene, Julius Fleischmann, L. V. Bell, P. J. Dwyer, J. G. Follansbee, W. S. Fanshawe, P. H. McCar-ren, W. J. Arkell and other prominent owners have entered horses for the Excelsior would seem to indicate that the racing at the Jamaica track will be particularly high class. New York Sun.
