TRAINING AT MEMPHIS. Memphis, Tenn., February 27. Of the three-year-olds wintering at Montgomery Park we have none with the fame that Mc-Chesney, Abe Frank, and Allan-a-Dale had as two-year-olds, but last year when these great stars of the American turf were with us, very few cared to hear or inquire about two really great three-year-olds that were also wintering here. These two were raced anywhere and often. Their names were Lu-cien Appleby and Aladdin, two of the very best three-year-olds out last year, and we may have a few Lucien Applebys and Alad-dins at Montgomery Park this season. " C. R. Ellison has the most prominent three-year-old on two-year-old form in Skilful. He is a fine looking colt and looks like a race horse. This horse is doing all that is asked of him. Ellison also has a Tennessee Derby candidate, that is thought very well of, Judge Himes. He is a big colt by Esher, that raced very little last year. Schorr has six promising three-year-olds, Spencer Reif , Janeway, John A. Scott, Bob McLean, Rightful, and Eva Russell. All these horses are doing fine. Janeway started but a few times last season, and in his only win defeated the famous Acefull. Spencer Reif and Rightful are being prepared for the Crescent City Derby. They were worked together yesterday and worked a mile better than l:47i, Spencer Reif finishing in front, but neither horse was driven out. Flocarline worked in about 1:48 handily. All three are being prepared for the Crescent City event. In Hildreths stable is Topsoil. This is the colt that defeated the famous Dick Welles, in a stake at Harlem last year. He is training well, but is a high strung, nervous kind of a colt. In Traceys stable will be found another colt that has the credit of beating Dick Welles, The Don. In Tichenors barn is the game little Sidney C. Love. He is small. Dont think he has grown a bit. Flocarline is a fine rangey Ally, very likely the best three -year-old filly on the race track. Cunningham has Gilfain here. This colt has his reputation from the race where he defeated McChesney. He is looking fine and doing well. Bennett has an immense stable here, forty-six head. He has a brother to Malvolio, called Alfio, which is eligible to the Tennessee Derby. He is a good looking horse. Au Revoir, on two-year-old form, I suppose, is the best three-year-old he has. He is not eligible to the Tennessee Derby, and was never entered. All of Bennetts horses are reported as doing well. I saw Abe Frank on the track the other day. He looks fine and is behaving so much better on the track. He is likely to be a real good horse this year. James Arthur has Philo here, along with W. J. Deboe. Charley Mahone has a bunch of two-year-olds and some older horses. Among the three-year-olds is a colt called John J. Began. J. C. Cahn has about fifteen head here. In the lot is Terra Firma. He declared him out of the Montgomery Handicap, as he did not want to hurry the horse in his training, but he expects him to train on. and race the latter part of the meeting. There are nearly four hundred horses here now, and not one sick horse on the grounds. This is certainly a record. Observer.
