GOSSIP OF THE TURF. The horses which are being trained at Clinton Park, Little Rock, are well advanced, and when the meeting opens Monday, March 23, they will be as fit as will be the contingent to come from New Orleans and Memphis. The winter has been unusually mild at Little Rock, and the trainers have not been handicapped as have those at Memphis and elsewhere. J. K. Hughes, the Texas turfman, is the latest arrival at the track. He brings a stable of ten, including The Light, Nearest, Kunja, Edgardo and Pourquoi Pas. Colonel R. Hardy Durham will race a string of seventeen horses this year, eleven of them being two-year-olds. They are now at Horse Haven, near Lexington, and will be shipped to Brighton Beach about April 15. McChesney had his first experience in the nature of work at the Montgomery Park track last Sunday. Without a skip or break the great four-year-old was sent on a long journey, which was finished up with a half-mile breeze negotiated in 54 seconds. The colt accomplished his work like it was nothing more than a romp, and from the manner in which he did it some doubts about his disliking the make-up of the track, were dispelled in the minds of trainers who witnessed it. Topsoil, S. C. Hildreths American Derby candidate, turned a handy mile in 1:51 and pulled up without any signs of distress.
