WEIGHTS IN THE EXCELSIOR. Hermis, the crack four-year-old owned by Louis V. Bell, has been assigned top weight in the Excelsior Handicap, which will be the feature event the opening day of the Metropolitan Jockey Clubs meeting at Jamaica, April 27. That handicapper Vos-burgh believes Hermis to be the best of the handicap division is again shown. He has now given him the post of honor in all of the rich handicaps of the year, an honor which few horses has achieved in the east for some seasons. There is little difference between the imposts assigned the horses in the Excelsior and those allotted for the Brooklyn, Suburban and Brighton handicaps. In fact, Hermis has only to shoulder one pound more, carrying 129 pounds, and the distance, a mile and a sixteenth, is more to his liking, while Advance Guard receives the same allotment of 125 pounds. The entries for the Excelsior are not quite as high class as those in the other big races, but Mr. "Vosburgh has apportioned the weights well, in fact, handled the material in hand with good judgment, so that with a fair field the Excelsior should prove a good betting contest and result in a grand race.
