MONTGOMERY WINNERS. What is now the Montgomery Handicap was first run at Memphis as the Montgomery Stakes, for three-year-olds, in the fall of 1882. It was at a, mile and a half and Apollo, 107, won, with Mediator, 107, second, Joe Murray, 110, third. Time. 2:42. Goodwins Guide records this race as having been run in 1883, but that is a mistake. Apollo won the Kentucky Derby of 18S2. The stake was discontinued until 1886, when it was revived as a race for all ages at 1 1-4 miles, with Modesty, 117, the winner, Punka, 113, second and Editor, 115, third. Time, 2:12 J. The event was discontinued again until 18S9. Then it was reinstated as a sweepstakes for three-year-olds and upward and has been run annually since. Up to 1897 the distance was 1 1-4 and 11-8 miles, but in that year it was changed to its present condition of a handicap at 1 1-16 miles.
