OWENTON BUNS POORLY. A crowd about equal in size to that of the proceeding day was present at Lakeside yesterday and witnessed a pretty fair afternoons sport. The sun and wind had dried the course considerably and for about iten feet from the insido rail the going was fairly good. Much interest was centered in the first appearance of Owenton in his four-year-old career. He appeared to be in excellent condition when going to the post, but if anything was a trifle heavy. He was pitted against sush sprinters as Scorpio and Albula in the fourth race, a dash of six furlongs for four-year-olds and upward. Scorpio, despite his rather dull race of the opening day, was made the favorite hut again met dofoat. He was taken to the front at once today but only lasted four and a half furlongs. Albula which won a good race Wednesday won in easy fashion, moving up to Scorpio at the head of the stretch and, easily passing into the lead when a furlong out, won well in hand by two lengths from Dr. Stephens which finished the same distance in front of Scorpio for second place. Dr. Stephens closed up ground fast in the stretch run and finished resolutely. He is fit and ready and bears watching from now on. Scorpio was well spent when a furlong out. He is a hard horse to goess. Owenton moved up into a prominent position after four furlongs had been run, but tired palpably under punishmant and was eased up somewhat at the end. Even at that his effort was promising. Race number one, a spin of six and a half furlongs for maiden throe-yaar-olds and upward, brought a very poor field to the post. Foxflyer, on his fair showing the day before, was fancied most, but sprung a surprise by not showing prominently at any part of the race. The winner turned up in San Sargassa, an outsider. Always well up after the first quarter had been, run, he assumed command soon afterward and, standing off Chicago Girls determined bid in the last eighth without faltering, won rather easily by two lengths. Chir cago Girl beat Dr. Moody two and a half longths for Becond place. Springstead ran in improved form and probably runs best on a good track. The second race, a split of the first, bronght about the same class horses to the barrier. Here, as in the first race, the winner turned up in an outsider, Hickory Corners winning in a spirited drive by a neck from La Honda, which finished five longths before Whangdoodle for second place. A field of eight fair two-year-old fillies contended in the third race, a scramble of four furlongs. Miss Callam was liked best, but could do no better than run a rather poor third. The spin resolved itself in the last eighth to a sharp drive between Miss Cornet and Lady Free Knight, the former outstaying the latter and winning by a neck, with Miss Callam third three and a half lengths back. There was some bumping between the first three when opposite the last eighth post, but it hardly affected the result. Miss Cornet moved up fast in the last quarter and was undoubtedly best. Lucretia M. showed a flash of early speed. Lingo, well backed by a few shrewd horsemen, proved to be the best in the fifth race, a dash of once around the track for three-year-olds and upward. Cut out of position at the first turn, she had to go all around the field, bnt moved up fast when going down the backstretch and easily wore down Chop Suey in the last quarter. She won well in hand by four lengths from Chop Suey, which beat Safeguard two for second place. The concluding race, another mile dash for three- year-olds and upward, resulted in a big romp for Alfred C, which won by three and a half lengths from Radford, with Moroni third, only a neck back, Radford began slowly, but passed the field fast in the last half. Moroni faltered in the closing strides. The betting was somewhat dull and light. In case no rain falls today good time may be expected.
