Oronte raced Betmuda into submission in the iirst half and had enough in reserve at the end to stall off a challenge from Flaneur. The latter was outrun in the early stages, but saved ground at the turn into the homestretch and finished fast. Captain Hugh Bradley is a slow beginner and lost ground by going wide at every turn. Reed laid in behind Ohnet and Sarah Maxim for the first half, went around the leaders at the far turn and the colt had enough left to stall off Major Tenny. The latter was messed about all through the race, but came very fast at the end and "was overhauling the leader at every stride. He was off running while the others got away all tangled up and easily held sway throughout. Potheen finished fast, caught Nitrate tiring and got up in the last few strides. Nitrate did his best and was hard ridden all of the last furlong. South Breeze and Huzzah were standing ilatfooted when the barrier went up and the latter got tangled up in the webbing. Wonderly got her off all tangled up and ran her into a pocket on the backstretch, then took her back and went all around the leaders at the far turn, when clear the filly came on fast and finished gamely. Golden Rule came fast next to the inside rail in the stretch, caught If You Dare tiring and was overhauling the winner at every stride.
