LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. Little Scout is now the ante-post favorite for the 0,000 Hawthorne Handicap, which is to be run at the Cicero track Saturday. Since his .good race in the Powers Handicap the Bennett four-year-old has been backed freely, and his price has been cut steadily from 30 to 1 until last night 6 to 1 was the best to be had. If Coburn gets down to weight he probably will be allowed the mount, but Henry McDaniel will not stand for an ounce of overweight. Glen Water has been backed into second place, at 8 to 1. Hernando stands steady at 10 to 1. Wyeth has been cut from twenties to 10 to 1; so has Gregor K, and Linguist is on the same mark, his price having been reduced from 15 to 1. Lucien Applebys price has been shaved from 50 to 40 to 1, on account of 00 being bet on him after his good showing in a sprint two days ago. Pat Dunnes English horse, Red Comyn, Has been well backed this week and is looming up as a dangerous competitor. Several loads of sand have made the track at Hawthorne slow and heavy, and a mile in 1:44 is considered good work. Plenty of rolling and harrowing is expected to make some improvement before the opening day. Yesterday morning Hargis worked a mile at Hawthorne in 1:49, and Little Scout in 1:52. The Lady stepped five furlongs in 1:09; Sav-able reeled off a half in 511 seconds and Skilful in 52 seconds. Harry News mile in 1:46 was the best work done by any of the Hawthorne Handicap, horses. At Worth Favonius was sent an easy mile in 1:45; Banter six furlongs in 1:173. Sam Fullen was worked at Worth by A. Forbes slowly in 1:47. Trainer R. Tucker got in yesterday with Capt. S. S. Browns string of twenty head. Horsemens badges for the Hawthorne meeting will be distributed at 2 p. m. today in the secretarys office at Worth, and at Hawthorne Friday morning. No badges will be issued Saturday. Entries for Saturdays races at Hawthorne will be received up to 11 a. m. Friday at Worth by Secretary Jasper, who will serve as entry clerk at the Chicago Jockey Clubs meeting. A representative of the club will be at Hawthorne until 11 a. m., and another will be at Harlem until 10 a. m for the same purpose. Entries for next Tuesdays 00 handicap, and for the 00 steeplechase to be run the same day, will close at Hawthorne Saturday morning. W. H. Fords Merciful, which started in the third race, fell before she had gone seventy yards and was apparently dead before she struck the ground. The accident was peculiar, no horse being near her at the time she fell, consequently she could not have met with interference. Jockey W. Knapp, who rode her, said that she went down in a heap, without any apparent cause. The rider escaped unhurt. Harry Beck is on the ailing list and will not be started for some time. Mr. Milam recently refused an offer of ,500 for the horse. It was announced yesterday that jockey S. Bonner, who rode some creditable races in California, would ride Lendin in the Hawthorne Handicap. Dominick was .too ill to accept mounts yesterday, suffering from cramps. S. C. Hildreth shipped all his horses yesterday from the Worth track to Harlem. Jockey A. Hall, who has been under contract to ride for Hildreth, has been released and will ride in future free lance. Jockey H. Phillips, who rode Beau Ormonde in the handicap yesterday, was recently released by his contract employer, J. Arthur, and will in future ride free lance. Frank J. Bryan, the new presiding judge at Hawthorne, will arrive in Chicago today from Latonia, where he went to see the running of the Derby at the conclusion of the Louisville meeting. Lester Reiff arrived in Chicago yesterday from California, and is expected to remain here during the summer.
