Wotan, ridden with" patience and skill, after getting away in the rear, improved his position rapidly when going .up the backstretch and, being, steadied on the turn, finished with a rare burst of speed in the stretch, just getting up at the very end. Knobhampton broke in his stride and practically forced the pace throughout and finished resolutely. He is an improved colt of gigantic size. Sacredus was shut out in the first furlong, but made up a lot of ground in the last half and finished fast. Graziallo went right out and was a hot i contender for five furlongs. Montana King, on the inside and away flatfooted, was kept I in a hopeless pocket, eventually falling to his knees on the stretch turn, but picked himself J up and set sail for the leaders in the. stretch and easily gained ten lengths in the stretcn.B run. Latheron finished close up. Topic can do better and has been highly tried. Scratched — 40182 Sandhurst, 112; 39669 Midshipman, 102; 40212 Sais, 102; 40212 Great Crossing, 99. Wotan, show, 3 to 2. At post 2 minutes. Start straggling. Won driving; second easily. Sambo, a fast and good horse, but difficult to guess in the hands of a slow jockey, was nearly left and, trailing his field for over half the journey, he commenced to pass his horses as if they were anchored and came on the extreme outside at the end with a phenomenal rush, just getting up in the last stride and going away fast. Water Tower was lucky and skillfully placed In the front division to the stretch, where he drew into a clear lead and appeared like winning, but was unexpectedly downed right at the end. Circus, nuder Burns vigorous ride, displayed more early speed than heretofore and rated along at a steady clip throughout. Homestead was a contender when* a furlong from the finish, where a big bunch were on even terms. Lord Advocate and Colonsay ran unexpectedly well for both suffered from crowding in the last furlong. Turnpike is evidently in his best form and on a heavy track would probably have won todays race. Ethics ran a dull race throughout. Winner — B. c, by Sir Modred — Duchess of Kendal trained by J. McLaughlin. Went to post at 3:25. At post 2 minutes. Start good. Won driving; second the same. Duke of Kendal is vastly improved and a fitter horse, due to the recent hot weather. He got away well and held a forward position in the first half, coming through with a rush on the inside when turning into the stretch and rather easily retained a safe leadito the end. St. Finnan made up ground on the turn and followed the winner closely into the stretch, where he finished out gamely. Flying Buttress held on gamely throughout under Bullmans energetic handling and scored a lucky third. Operator took to the outside except in the final furlong, where he swerved over to the inner rails and was a good horse badly messed about. Midnight Chimes led by quite a margin for nearly five furlongs and held on unexpectedly well at the end. Wealth made up ground in the stretch. Duelist got away very badly. Bon Mot followed Flying Jib closely, had clear sailing throughout, finished out the final I furlong with a rare burst of speed and won going away. Flying Jib made the running for | nearly nine furlongs, hard held for the first mile and it appeard as if he refused to try , in the final furlong. "W. R. Condon was a prominent contender throughout and bids fair to develop into a superior horse over a considerable distance of ground. Warranted and Brigand brought up the rear for over seven furlongs and both made up a lot of ground In the last half mile, finishing with a rush. The other three gave way in the run home. Divination won all the way after getting away in her stride and, under Bullmans tremendously vigorous finish, just got home by a narrow margin. Pristina closed a big gap from a rear position, overcoming plenty of interference, coming at tho end like a cyclone on her own courage. Possession was hopelessly handicapped with a bad jockey and was a good filly today. St. Roma shows improved form. M. Theo was never dangerous. Marmee made up ten lengths on the winner from a bad start. Yo San is a morning glory and a quitter in her races. Overweights — Divination, 2 pounds. • Divination, show, 3 to 5. Tribes Hill worked a difficult passage for a full mile of the journey and only got clear sailing in the last sixteenth, where he finished with an irresistible rush and was much the best. Rostand was prominent throughout and at the end got up and beat Syrlin for second place in the last stride. Syrlin ran well to the stretch and hung on well. Henry Clay , Rye made up a lot of ground in the last five furlongs. Past was badly messed about and L tiring at the end. Dark Planet closed a big gap after getting away poorly.
