LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. McChesney and Grand Opera were given workouts after the last race yesterday. The former was sent one mile and a furlong, in preparation for the Wheeler Handicap. "Big Mc" appeared at his best and traveled over the ground in an impressive manner, reeling off the different quarters in almost equal time and negotiated the full distance in 1:55, eased up near the end. Grand Opera was only sent a half mile. He appeared to be speedy, but was kept under restraint and at that worked the distance in 49. Mr. Smathers other recent purchase, Stevedore, is reported to have bowed a tendon in his work last Monday and will probably not be raced again until late in the fall. J. B. Respess Six Shooter and T. C. McDowells Monarka, two prominent candidates for the Wheeler Handicap, were given workouts yesterday morning and the sensational manner in which both performed was ,the chief topic among the rail birds and "dockers." Six Shooter, supposedly carrying more than his allotment in the Wheeler Handicap, worked a mile and a quarter in 2:06. Monarka also negotiated the distance in the same time, but was eased up during the last furlong. Her time for. the mile and a furlong was 1:52. Continued from first page. betting had been in progress for some time on the third race that Dominick would ride Peter Paul instead of Wj. Waldo, who had previously been slated. On the supposition that Waldo would ride the Bradley gelding bookmakers took liberties with him and laid 3 to 1 against him. Nearly all the big layers received a heavy play on the horse at this price, but when Dominick was announced as his rider the odds soon changed to 8 to 5. Bad News and Sidney C. Love bumped into each other as the starter released the barrier for the fourth race. Bad News, being the heavier of the two, suffered little by the mishap and quickly raced into the lead. Sidney C. Love, however, was shuffled back and nearly knocked down and before jockey Hel-gesen could straighten him out the rest of the field was a long way in front. In addi- j tion to being nearly thrown down, Piederich kicked him while at the post. That he finished third under the circumstance was a good performance and left the impression that with equal racing luck he would have given the winner a stout argument. Gorman and Bauers horses, with the exception of a couple of two-year-olds, will be shipped to Harlem and rested until the racing begins there. The two-year-olds which are at present recovering from an ailment will be shipped to the farm near Lexington. Ky., and turned out. Jockey Adkins was yesterday, on complaint of the starter, suspended indefinitely by the judges for cutting across the field at the start on Cousin Carrie. Middleton and Jungbluths horses, including The Picket and Santon, in charge of tralnĀ« C. B. Reed, will be shipped next Friday to Saratoga. The Picket is now fully recovered from his mishap in the American Derby and is being exercised daily. J. A. Drakes horses will be. shipped next Saturday to Saratoga, They will be sent on two trains. The first lot will leave at 10 a. m. and the second at 2 p. m. Lyman Davis, the assistant secretary of th.e Worth* Jockey Club, and who acted as the racing secretary at the mixed meeting held recently at Indianapolis, returned yesterday and stated that the meeting there was a success and attracted large crowds daily. He thought* that a meeting there, providing it was not of more than two weeks duration, could be made to pay, and appears a future possibility. During the six days the meeting was in progress ,500 was distributed to the runners-and ,000 to the trotters. A number of outlawed horses and jockeys were there, but Tvere prevented from participating, the meeting being held under the Western Jocker Club rules.
