LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. E. Corrigan has purchased at private terms from F. Cook the horse Haviland, and intends to race him at Los Angeles this winter. Mezzo, winner of the fifth race, entered to be sold for ,200, was bid up to ,600 by H. McCoulskey but retained by owner Dunne with an advance bid of . Mezzo was also bid up in her previous start by McCoulskey 00 over her entered price of 00. President Thos. H. Williams, of the California Jockey Club, was among the visitors at Worth yesterday, having just arrived from New York where he has been on business connected with his club, and expressed himself as highly pleased with the outlook for this seasons racing at San Francisco. The majority of horse owners are of the opinion that he is not more than fourteen hands high. At present he Is in grand form and should have no trouble to hold his own in any company in short distance races. Olympian, which .started in the third race, pulled up very lame after the finish. E. Corrigan shipped eleven horses yesterday to Latonia, where they will be raced during the meeting there. Mr. Corrigan will himself remain at Latonia for several days before going on to his stock farm in Kentucky. Charawind and Precious Stone, purchased recently by Corrigan while in New York, arrived at Hawthorne yesterday and Will be rested until shipped to Los Angeles. Golden Mineral, which was recently purchased by J. H. McCormack acting for P. Dunne at G. B. Morris sale in New York, arrived at Hawthorne yesterday. Benson Caldwell, the winner of the closing race, was the medium of a heavy plunge by some of the knowing ones, who secured odds of 15 to 1 in some instances for their money. The horse never gave them a moment of anxiety after the first quarter was reached and won eased up. It was reported that jockey W. Robbins had been let go by Jas. Arthur, and the former will now be riding free lance.
