GOSSIP OF THE TURF. ! Starter Fitzgerald has inaugurated a new system in sending his fields away from the post at New Orleans. From now on the horses will be lined up fifty yards back of the barrier and allowed to walk up. If they are in line they will be sent off, otherwise they will be made to stand up to the barrier and sent away ilatfooted. This will save time and no doubt give better satisfaction j to the owners and public alike. I Secretary Clark has received word from Registrar Wheeler, of the Jockey Club, that the horse Ravino had been properly registered. The markings of the horse correspond with those given on the registration papers. With this information in hand Secretary Clark informed the owners of Ravino that Ravino would be permitted to start if they produced five reputable horsemen who would satisfactorily Identify the horse. George C. Bennett made his first appearance of the New Orleans meeting last Wednesday. Mr. Bennett went down from Memphis and will remain several days. He had a good bet on Dan McKenna. It was the first time he had the pleasure of seeing his recent purchase carry his colors, and had the further satisfaction of cashing several good bets on Dan McKenna after the race. H. P. Headley, owner of Ornament and the Beaumont Farm, is a visitor at New Orleans. Mr. Headleys visit is on pleasure only, and he will spend a few weeks in the Crescent City. G. C. Bennett has purchased of R. Tucker the promising two-year-old Misanthrope. This colt has won his last two races In rather impressive fashion, and it looks as if Bennett had made a very desirable addition to the string which he is racing at New Orleans. J. W. Schorr and S. S. Brown, who have extensive racing strings in winter retirement at Montgomery Park, will sell off all surplus stock now racing at New Orleans. The Schorr string in the Crescent City embraces Dutiful, Monastic II. and other youngsters eligible for many three-year-old stakes for 1904.
