GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Ed Jasper, racing secretary and official handicapper of Ascot Park, has returned to Los Angeles from San Francisco. He brought back with him about 150 entries for the stakes to be run there this winter, and reports that the interest in the southern track seems to be very strong in the north. Horsemen like the idea of being able to run their horses in a climate where it does not rain every other day, and the men who do not possess a stable of "mudders" will certainly open up at Ascot on the 24th of the month. Among the many entries which have been received for the Ascot Park stakes the following well-known owners are represented: Burns and Waterhouse, H. T. Griffin, E. Herz, James T. Williams, C. T. Boots, Boots and Hollenback, E. Corrigan, P. Dunne, C. E. Durnell, E. J. Baldwin, J. J. McAlester, H. E. Rowell, B. Schreiber, J. F. Newman, S. G. Morton, M. J. Daly, C. Young, J. F. Schorr, J. Curl, W. J. Speirs, John Hackett, T. G. Ferguson, P. Wilkerson, W. B. Sink Jr., Lester Reiff, Sam Sparks, John D. Millin, G. B. Morris, H. L. Frank, W. McLemore, J. Coffey, C. A. Durfee, E. L. Kripp, Los Angeles Stable, J. V. Kirby, R. Wilson, Winter and Johnson, J. Bondy, J. Woods, J. P. Atkin, J. F. Clifford, Johnson and Dobson, U. Z. DeArman, A. A. Donahue, A. Goodin and Co.,C. E. Wolff, F. E. Burnell, F. Reagan, P. Hildreth, VanMeter and Hayes, G. Strobel, W. Durker. Frank Bruhns arrived at Nashville from Washington last Wednesday with his stable and went into winter quarters at Cumberland Park. The stable has been in the east since the close of Kenilworth at Buffalo, having raced at Sheepshead Bay, Westchester, Jamaica and. Bennings. The campaign down east was not as successful as Mr. Bruhns expected. Several of his horses went wrong, causing a let-up just when it looked like they had a royal chance of winning some good races. Harding and Ice Water were the principal bread-winners. Both won stakes during the campaign, besides several handicaps. Harding is the property of the Troxler boys and he has been a useful animal for them. The two-year-old filly Van Tassell, full sister to Von Rouse, never got to the races, having been on the sick list most of the summer. In all the stable won about ,000. Jake Marklein sold Laura F. M. and Bris-sac in the paddock at Oakland Wednesday. John Millin got Laura F. M. for ,400 and D. Ripley took Brissac for 00. H. T. Griffin, the New York turfman,, accompanied by Alderman Ernest A. Seebeck, of New York, spent last Thursday at Hamburg Place, the guests of John E. Madden. Mr. Griffin has shipped Trepan, Stroller and Conklingto New Orleans, and to Los Angeles he is sending Red Damsel, Gloriosa and Bill Curtis.
