BERT OSRA DISAPPOINTS MANY BACKERS. Alma Dufour Surprises the Wise Ones A Good Days Sport at City Park. New Orleans, La., January 3. There was good sport at City Park this afternoon. The races were keenly contested from start to finish. The sun shone brightly and the attendance was good. It was a betting crowd and for an off day the rings business was unusually heavy. The bookmakers quit the day with the best of the argument. Horses fell In two races, but there were no serious results attending the mishaps. Because she had not been out recently, the bettors generally fought shy of Alma Dufour, Belle Strouie going to the post favorite, but they made a costly mistake. Alma Dufour is certainly a good mare. When the start came she was off in front, but she was flatfooled and before they had gone a furlong she was a dozen lengths behind the leaders. Rounding the turn for home she closed up fast and coming with a rush got up in the last sixteenth and won going away. Bert Osra, the heavily, backed favorite for the tjfth race was supoosed to be a good thing. The horse was bet on all over the country, the money being placed wherever a poolroom would accept a commission. Joe McLennan purchased the colt from II. T. Griffin at Chicago in 1904, but he broke down shortly afterward. Until the latter part of October he was turned out. The field in todays race was a large one and in the scramble for positions after the start Bert Osra was crowded out of it. Harry Laudeman, the well known western bookmaker, was among those present for the first time this season.
