BAD NEWS WINS KING COTTON HANDICAP. Tartan Takes Live Oak Selling: Stakes in a Canter and Is Bid Up Jade Falls. New Orleans, La., January 0. E. R. Bradleys brown gelding Bad News was a mighty good horse at City Park this afternoon. In the contest for the King Cotton Handicap, he not alone bore his burden of 120 pounds, but had to contend with a lot of bumping. Several times during the race it seemed as if he would be put out of the running, but in the last sixteenth he caught the pacemaker, Clifton Forge, and beat him out. Clifton Forge, which had the rail position, rushed to the front from a good start, followed by Devout, Gold-mate and Bad News. They were in that order to the backstretch when Mclntyre, on Bad News, went up next to the rail into third place. It was then that he was interfered with by Nicol on Devout. Nicol kent riding Mclntyre close and several times it appeared as If he did hit liim. Mclntyre held his position, but on the" far turn got another jolt. When the field got into the stretch, Mclntyre knew he had a good horse and after entering the last furlong, he squeezed through next to the rail and the race was over. Will Wallace arrived here this morning with six horses from Memphis. Among them were Bip, Dr. Nowlin, Python, Brick top, Evelyn J. and a two-year-old. The Live Oak Selling Stakes, an annual feature at Crescent Park, was the chief event there today. In this race Luretta, a frequent winner, had her string of victories broken by Tartan, the erratic performer from the Chinn and Forsythe stable, recently ruled out of races except when the track is in good condition. After his easy and impressive victory. Captain Jim Williams bid him up to ,400, an advance of 00 over his entered price. He was retained. Colonel White, winner of the last race, was bid tip .00 over his entered price of ,000 and retained by his owner. Frank Brulms arrived today from Nashville with the good performer Benvolio, which is slated to start in the Jackson Handicap. Eight two-year-olds, the property of Pangritz and Nelson arrived today from Memphis and are stabled at. the old track. Jockey W. Hayes, who had the mount on Jade in the opening race, had a narrow escape from injury when his mount fell shortly after the start. He was knocked unconscious, but rallied after a short time and beyond a severe shakeup and bruises about the shoulders, was uninjured. Cognomen, while on her way to the post in the fifth race, took the bit between her teeth and ran away two miles, stopping short in front of the judges stand and unseating her rider. She was led back to the post, but pulled up after going about a quarter of a mile in the race. Cognomen was responsible for trainer John Lows injury last summer at Belmont Park track. Etrena also acted frac-tlously and ran away three miles after the finish of the first race before jockey McGee could get her under control.
