FRIENDLESS IS IDENTIFIED. RUMOR THAT BIRDSLAYER OR DEERSLAYER WAS SUBSTITUTED IS DISPROVED. Crescent City Jockey Club Officials, However, Are Investigating E. E. Farleys Connection with Ownership of the Horse. New Orleans, La., January 25. After the victory of Friendless in the second race at Crescent Park yesterday afternoon, jt developed that the horse had been extensively backed in poolrooms and handbooks at New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit, Hot Springs, Cincinnati, Louisville and other places and following this came the statement that the five-year-old gelding Birdslayer, by Deerslayer OHIe Bird, indefinitely suspended at Highland Park, July II! last, then the projierty of W. M. Leonard, had tHcn snlislltutcil for Friendless. The officials of the Crescent City Jockey Club lie-gan an investigation last night and this morning the "ringer" story was etTectually disproved, but there is an angle about the ownership of the horse which will have to lie cleared up before the ease is finally disposed of. rending tlds, the Crescent City Jockey Club has taken possession of the horse and payment of the purse lias been suspended. The investigation of the "ringer" story developed that liirdslayer is here in the stable of Kirby Orr. The two horses were brought out this morning. They are much alike as to color and markings, but Birdslayer is a hand lower in height and fully 150 pounds lighter than Friendless. Friendless has a hip down. S. J. Charles, who bred Birdslayer at his farm in Texas, took a look at Friendless yesterday and declared that he was not Birdslayer. Friendless was bred by Tom Ryan. He is by ljunojs, quf of My, Friend,., .and. is. a, fonrryear-.old.. Mr. Ryan was asked by the otticials for any mark- lugs that could lie used in the identification of the horse and lie wired a description of him in which he told of the affliction to the hip. The question of ownership involves the supposed connection of K. 12. Farley, who was ruled off at Detroit three years ago for the "ringing" of the mure Aimless as Sarah Black at Crosse lointe track. Friendless was raced without success by Ed Ryan, who sold him to Charley Kelly The latter raced him at Springfield, Illinois, last summer and then sldpped to Latonia. On the last day of tub meeting at the Kentucky track Farley Induced Mike Scanlon, well known in theatrical and hotel circles, to buy the horse. The horse was sent here from Latonia along witli J. I. Mayherrys string and turned over to W. A. Tolton, wlio was in the employ of Farley at the time of the Sarali Black episode. Scanlon, when questioned by the judges today, said he had wired Farley at Hot Springs to bet on the horse, and that after the race Farley had wired him that the money had not leeii let. It was also claimed that Deerslayer had leen substituted, but S. J. Charles told the officials that Deerslayer was killed in his stud at Uvalde, Texas, last year.
