PADDOCK JUDGE LYLES IS OVER-ALERT. Confused by Rumors of "Ringers," He Orders Nutwood Scratched Close Finishes at City Park. New Orleans, La., January 25. Edward Wilder, Belllndiuii a;id Begonia were the winning choices at City Iark this afternoon. Six of the seven races furnished driving finishes. Jockeys Wishard and Nicol divided the riding honors, each piloting two winners. The defeat of Minnie Adams in the third race was probably the biggest upset of the afternoon. Cooks filly had shown a sensational trial of five furlongs in 1:01 witli big weight up a few days ago and the tip was spread around by the work-wa tellers. The filly lacked speed in the early running, lint finished gamely and will likely show to better advantage over a longer route. The track was in excellent condition and fast time was the. rufe. Jockey Tottering was suspended for six days for rough riding In the sixth race. He interfered with Big Bow when the start came and knocked the latter out of the running. Miss Jewell,, a chestnut filly by Lamplighter Bad Luck, entered in the two-year-old race by Banks and Bradford, was ordered scratched by the officials on account of lack of identification. Iaddock Judge Lyles is on his mettle these days and especially so after the reports that the real Friendless did not win the second race at the old track yesterday. In the seventh race today Sam Trowbridge hail his three-year-old Nutwood entered. Judge Lyles was under the impression that the horse had not started before and when he was not brought to the paddock thirty minutes before the race to be identified, as per the track rule, he scratched the horse. It afterward developed that the worthy paddock judge was over-alert. Nutwood had started three times during the early days of the meeting. Albert Simons lias obtained second call on the services of jockey Nicol for the remainder of the meeting. J. II. McCormlck is having poor hick witli his stable here this .winter. Emergency is the latest in Ids bam to take sick. He is down with mouth thrush and will not race for some time. This disease appears to be epidemic at City Iark. It Is going the rounds of all the stables. "Frisco" Gardners bunch have lieen sick with it and arc just now recovering. The purse won ijy Emergency Wednesday was takcii away from him. According ti the conditions of the race a winner of two races since June 1 would be penalized five pounds. Emergency did not carry this extra five pounds, hence his disqualification. McCormlck claimed that he overlooked it. The disqualification of Emergency gives first money to Jack Dolan. Johif Hyner, who trained for Stephen Sanford last season, was a visitor at City Park today. Mr. Hyner says he has not as yet made any arrangements for the coming year. 11 train a public stable in the cast or may race a small string of his own in the west.
