I SIR WILFRED LOWERS AN ASCOT RECORD. I Runs Five-eighths of a Mile in :59 Durnell Gets Money Muss Horner Is Suspended. Los Angeles, Cal., February 1. In winning the third race today, Sir Wilfred set a new record for five-eighths of a mile over the Ascot Park track. He ran the distance in 592 seconds and, in the opinion of many horsemen who saw the performance, had there been anything to force him out lie would have smashed the American record of :50, which was made by George F. Smith over the old Ray District track at San Francisco in 1S93. The previous record at Ascot Park was 1:00, made by Gold Rose, December 5, 1001, while she was the property of Green 11. Morris. The weather today was delightful. In consequence there was an increase iu the attendance. "Roots" Durnell had another big day in a betting way. J. 15. Brady was another heavy winner. Jockey Millers riding was a distinct feature, especially so his handling of Hcuchman. Duruell took Money Muss away from McCafferty, bidding hiui up from ,500 to ,000. Jockey Homer was fined 0 and suspended for one week for rough riding. He will, however, be ierniitted to ride for his employer.
