POPE JOAN VERSUS DE MUND. Saratoga, X. T., August 29. Two large bets on the Futurity were recorded last night. James Pickens of Albany was declaiming on the speed and stamina of Pope Joan, one. of James R. Keenes candidates for Saturdays big race for two-year-olds, to a number of horsemen, and bookmakers. Bob Tucker, who was one of the party, expressed his disbelief In the horse. "Talk is cheap," Pickens is reported to have said. "I am willing to back Pope Joan with good money." "Well, Ive got a dollar or two to wager that I can name a horse that will beat Pope Joan," replied Tucker. "Ill bet you ,000 even you cant," said Pickens. "Xoure on," was -Tnekers answer, "and . I will name De Mund for my Ahorse." Leo Mayer, the bookmaker, who was also present, then turned to Tucker anil said: "Dont be a piker, Bob. If Mr. Pickens really wants to bet on Pope Joan I will lay him ,000 to ;500 that De Mund wlli beat her, both horses to start." Pickens took up the bet, making a total of ,500 Invested on the fillys chances as against Ralueys crack sprinter.
