Nothing loath to win a small fortune the women did as directed, or thought the men did, ,and when Miss Crawford won at 20 to 1, they mentally calculated they were worth ?2,000. , "Subsequent events proved that they were worth that sura in their mind only, for the men failed to put in an appearance, although the women waited patiently two hours for theni. An investigation by the police. of the charges revealed the fact that tin; men had not bet on either of the winners.
