Commandant pursued the leader closely and moved Into the lead when beginning the last half and was only caught right at the end of a very game and promising effort. Expansionist ran prominently and gamely throughout. Balzac, excessively urged to dispose of Desert Chief in the early running, tired badly at the end and might have won if saved judiciously.
