SPOILS COUP AT IAT0NIA. ST0NER HILL DEFEATS ST. JOSEPH AND SHATTERS DALYS EXPECTATIONS. Public Much Out of Pocket When Daring andEthel Day Are Beaten Manzano Loses Rider in the Steeplechase. J Cincinnati, 0., October 25. The defeats of Daring and Ethel Day, both heavily backed at oddsron, proved costly to the public at Latonia this afternoon. Both were thought to be the best . bettins propositions during the day. Darings defeat was due in the main to lack of judgment on the part of jockey Fischer. Ethel Day would probably have won her race with a better send-off. Nicol eased her up through the stretch when it appeared that she had no chance of winning. Gladiator, the longest priced winner of the afternoon, took the race that Daring was in, and Salvage recently purchased from M. J. Daly by W. F. Walter, scored in the race In which Ethel Day was a starter. After the finish Walter claimed Ethel Day, paying Rome Respess ,100 for the gray Ally. Stoner nill was another long priced horse to upset calculations by taking the third race from St. Joseph on which M. J. Daly attempted a coup. The surprise was the failure of the well backed choices to finish in the money. Lady Jocelyn, which won the steeplechase, received steady-support; whereas -Manzano", "tfiViogicai contender, continued to recede until Judge Price deemed it advisable to caution jockey Rice to put up his best efforts. The warning instilled a little confidence and he was backed down slightly from his high price. Lady Jocelyn had little trouble in landing the purseafter Manzano came to grief by stepping in a hole while on the flat racing to the first jump, which unseated the rider. Fonsolnca and Refined were the other choices to score; both were best. H. C. Riddle arrived today from Louisville with four horses. J. C. Milam telegraphed that stable room for twelve horses be reserved- for hlra. He will ship them from Lexington tomorrow. Knowledge bled after going a half and was eased up.
