NOTES OF THE TURF. Dainty will probably be retired after the conclusion of the Bennings meeting and be bred next year to Islington, sire of Kinley Mack. Only two tracks in action today, but Oakland arrives tomorrow, with some crack horses ready to contend for the valuable Opening Handicap. The stables of William Gerst, A. Brown and Co. and J. M. John sou arrived at Nashville Tuesday and have gone into winter quarters at Cumberland Park. Some of the Brown and Johnson horses will be sent to New Orleans later on. Information as to the whereabouts of Jockey James McCann, who at one time was employed by M. Goldblatt, is anxiously sought by his mother. Any information sent to this office will be promptly sent to her and is solicited. Mr. Hitchcock has concluded that Orthodox will not do as a jumper. His record of a mile in 1:38 was a tempting starting point, but like some other horses of great speed on the flat put to jumping in recent years, he was a rank failure through the field. - The able and accomplished Latonia correspondents who almost had the Western Jockey Club, and American Turf Association merged a day or two ago, have been forced by circumstances beyond their control to postpone the merger until some time next winter at New Orleans. James Oxnard, a brother of the sugar trust magnate H. T. Oxnard, will race a stable -of youngsters next year with William Brooks as trainer. It is said that H. T. Oxnard intends to retire from the turf and will confine his Interest in the thoroughbred to his breeding farm in Virginia. Sol Lichtenstein was the only witness for the defense in the Davis case at Washington. In his testimony he said: "My business follows- me. Nobody does my business but me. If I bet, no matter where? I bet, that is my place of business. No man takes bets for me at all. I never had a .box. ..I dont use boxes. Nobody bets for me but. myself. It may be my personal popularity, but wherever 1 go people want-to bet. with me." . .. . ,
