RUBRICS WIN CAUSES HOWL GAYLORD HORSE. HEAVILY BACKED, CANTERS AWAY FROM FIELD. Stewards to Investigate the Race — Books Are Hard Hit— Weather Cold and Track a Sea of Mud. Oakland, Cal., January 14. — Rubric won todays ra.e at a mile, in a common canter from the cracker-Jseks, Rorgliesi and Logistilla. Tlie unexpected victory of Caylords horse was greeted with a storm of disapproval by the sjiectators. In his last race Rubric, witli Miller up. was unable to raise a respectable gallop and finished a bad last in mediocre company. Today he was backed with confidence to beat some of the best hero and won out with all ease. It Aas one of the most glaring form reversals of the present meeting. S. C.
