WATERCRESS FIFTH IN SIRE LIST. Watercress, the handsome brown son of Springfield and Wbarfdale. by Hermit, is fifth in the list of stallions for Rmm;. Watercress is now seventeen years old and has been in this country nearly twelve years. He was bred by Lord Falmouth in F.ngland. but shortly after he was foaled his breeder died and he was sold as a yearling to Baron de Hirsch. in whose colors he raced in England for four years. Baron de Hirsch sold him to Mr. J. B. Haggin in May, 1894, and ho was brought to America and placed in tho stud at Rancho del Paso in California, serving his first mares in the spring of 1805. When Mr. Haggin dispersed his Rancho del Paso establishment it was ex|iected that Watercrass would find a new owner through the auction sale at Madison Square Garden in Decemtier, 1905, but Mr. Haggin did not lot him go. He outbid all contenders and bought him iu for 1,000, sending him to the Elmendorf Stud in Kentucky, where he made the season of 1! 06 and where he now is. Watercress was a good racehorse. Ho was unplaced in his only race as a two-year-old in 18*1, but during the next two years he won six races out of fifteen starts and was only three times unplaced, earning a total of $:i.S.Sf45. In 18! 2 he won the PrhMe of Wales Stakes at Ascot first crack out of the box. Following this he was defeated by St. Angelo for Ike St. James Stakes: was second to Onne for the Sussex Stakes, running that noted horse to a head finish; was third to La Fleebe and Sir Hugo for the Doncastcr St. Ix ger; was unplaced in the Duke of York Stakes; finished second in the Hose Stakes and won the Amphion Plate and tho Liverpool St. I.oger. Watercress began the season of 1K!»: by finishing unplaced in the Royal Hunt Handicap. Then he won the Hanhvick Handicap with 138 pounds up. His next essay was against Marcion for the Selection Stakes and Marcion l eat him three parts of a length in a hard race, only the two horses starting. He followed this with a victory in the PrsjlSB Handicap, carrying 138 pounds over the Craven Course one mile and a quarter at Goodwood. Next he was third for the Cordon Stakes: won the Great Lancashire Handicap and wound up the year by lieing unplaced in the Lancashire Handicap. His only race in 1S!I4 was for the Manchester Cup Handicap on May 17. Ho was unplaced but certainly not disgraced. Tho race resulted in a dead heat b« twees Shan eroths and Red Ensign, with Progression a neck back of them, Kilallaghan a head back of Progression and Watercress next. It was shortly after this race that Mr. Haggin bought Watercress. What lie paid for him was never made public. Watercress has several times ranked well up in the sire list, but It has never bees his fortune to bo at tho top in any year. Iu 1!MX and 1901 he had representatives on the turf both in this country and*in England. In the spring of 18M Mr. Haggin sent over to England eighty-five yearlings by various sires, four of them by utercress. and they wee said during tho second week in July at Newmarket. These raced as two-year-olds in 19fl . The following year the late William C. Whitney and Edward Cor-rigan both had some of the get of Watercress in England and collectively they won 7 o H . That same year. MM, Nasturtium was about the best two-year-old and Watorcolor the best throe year-old iu this country, so Watercress get here and away earned something over 02,000. The next year Mr. Whitney sent Nasturtium to England to run in the Derby, but he went amiss. In IS88 Water cress was fourth in the sire list. In 1JHM lie had out twenty -five winners, but did not rank in the first twenty. In SMS he was seventh. Following is tlie record of the performances of his got in 1906: WATERCRESS, br. h.
