CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE THORNTON STAKES. Claudius raced ont far in front for three and a tntarter miles, while Star Ruby was actually uio.v than i half mile lielrn 1 l"f most of this distance and galloping along so slowly that he was a beak horse when he reached the turn into the backstutch in the fourth mil-. Then Martin sent him along three -quartets in 1:1 I] and oi Py twenty lengths. The race in is:t!». when The Rachel. ,r broke all records for s race at four miles, was another memorable contest. David Tenny. also running a great race and forcing the record breaking. Judge Denny in 189S. Porte in 1900 and Locochee in 1901 all ran grand races at tie distance.
