March 15. — If the entiies ,.tu be taken as a criteria*, ereaa-eoaatry racing at Belmont Park this spring will be of a high order. The steeple Chase events have tilled wonderfully well. The Whitney Memorial re.-eived eleven ■ahaill|llil— two more than last year. The names of the sub ■crfhera have not yei been made public, but the] undoubtedly include all of the leading steeplechase owners. The name of Geed and Plenty, winner of the two former runnings of the event, will doubt less be found as one of Thomas Bttehceek, fc.a eetrlea when the horses are named. .May 1. The conditions for the lace are not such as |., attract a big entry list, as the subscription is .v.mi. half forfeit. The conditions permit three harass i to be named tot ea.-h subscription on May 1. only one of which may start. Although the value of the winner runs from tf.OM to 0.1100. there is little inducement for a man to take a chance unless he has a horse of real nuality. The Whitney Memorial ; was established with the opening of the Belmont Park track, and the honors so far are all for Cood 1 and Plenty. Although training the sou of Baaatef ton was considered ti dubious question last spring. be was brought back to win Ihuu the Whitney Me inorial and the Grand National and there is goad reason to believe he will come back this spring even better than he was last year. To win the race again would put the cap sheaf on the mceesa ful career of the best steeplechaser thia country has seen in many years. The Grand National, second in value and impor- lance to the Whitney Memorial, received fori Ms entries: the International forty seven, and the New York Biirty six for the Meadow Brook Hunters ten nominations have been made, but the number . will no doubt be considerably increased at the sec oud closing. May 11. as owners will have the op poitunity inei.ntiine to try out in public their horses holding certificates as hunter-. The entries have, been very heavy far all of the Westchester Stakes, as the following table will show : SPRING LVK.NTS. Increased entries for the Municipal and Belnioni park Weight for Age show the immediate results of the increase OC the values ,,f the events. Last spring the former received twenty Hire,, entries a: the March .losing and one in August, while the weight f,,i age la.-e received only ten entiies in March and closed with eighteen all told. I. Ambrose Clark. Bishop Potters son in law. who is in Luiope just now. is making preparations far an extensive Steeplechase canipaiirn at Saratoga. Mr. Clark has written the Saratoga Association to put four four year olds, for which lie paid good prices at Belmont Park last lull, in the four Sara toga Bteeptechasea, and he will, be writes, strive to have them on edge in August. The four steeplechase fixtures jM qaeattoa are the Saratoga. ,0M added, the Shillelah. the BcTeTWyck, and the North American. The Saratoga, which was instituted last season and won by llerculoid under the silks of Charles Pfizer, is the most valuable ol this quartette. The North A merit an i- the second richest. It generally pays alxait S3JM0 to the winner. Bat. Bayonet, Old Faithful and McKittredge are the bersea Mr. Clark puts in the Saratoga moss ciiniry specials. Bat is a gigantic son of Meddler and Buela. for which Clark paid *l.:,ii; Old l.iiil, ful. a gelding by Hamburg, out of Semper Chicle. est him S1.1UU: MeKittridge. by Goodrich Ml la Mason, cost S4,0M, and Bayonet, by Handspring, out of Vollario. cost .fj.jon. Ba| .nl| nl,| Faithful were bred by Harry Payne Whitney, and they bore his Klon Mae jacket and brown cap until they were s.1.1 to Mr. Clark. M.Kittiidge, a half brother to both First Mason and MeChesney. was raced by Herman It. pMiyea. and Bayonet, a half brother to The Picket, winner of the American Derby f tOM and the Brooklyn Handicap of M04, formerly Belonged to Middleton Juugbliith. Mr. Clark, who had some success with HUPS country horses a few years back, made a bigger investment when he Uuight these horses than be had before. Also be paid more fee undeveloped .steeplechase horses last season than did any other man in America. Since the racetracks of the east have instituted a string of takes -the Grand Na lional. Whitney Memorial. Empire State. Beacon. Brighton. Saratoga. Great Autumn and Champion -worth annually from ,000 to 2,040 each to Unwinder, it is up to other fanciers of cross country sport to follow Mr. Clarks example.
