HALBARD BECOMES A DERBY FACTOR. Judqe Post Is a Sick Horse — Not Likely to Start in Biq Race. New Orleans. I.a.. March 10. — The conditions of Hie fourth race at the Fair Grounds this afternoon Were framed lo suit Crescent City Derby candidates, and four of the six starters were eligibles for Saturdays big tace They were Kred Burlews Judge Cost. Mrs. M. Ooldhlatts Gargantua and fantastic. and I*. M. Civills Halliard. Judge Post, with Ni -ol up. was fancied almost to the exclusion of the others, of which Halliard was the least thought of. Chills colt had never shown anything in public to warrant his being given a chance to beat anything with the lea-t pretension lo g iod class. Ilal-ibard. however, displayed his true form in this race, winning in an exciting finish. Off forwardly he was a keen contender at all stages, dropped in behind Oargantua and Fantastic, which were out Id front setting the pair, and on the far turn moved up on the outside, and in the run through the homestretch closed up steadily under punishment, caught Gargantua tiring and passed him in the last few strides. Judge Post was outrun all the •way and was beaten off. the finish finding him last but one. It was said down town tonight that Judge Post has a fever and that his temperature is 103. If this proves true he can lie eliminated as a wtarter in the Parky. Halliards victory today makes him a certain starter in the Derby. . Goldproof had won Ma leal seven races and this led the talenl lo the belief that he was the best form of the race. Southern Cross cairied Gold-proof along at a rapid pace for the lir-l hall :ind then area away, but was force, I lo a drive at the tini-h lo stall off Doaaa Klvira. Allien Simons. W. K.
