WEATHER AT TORONTO IS WINTRY. Secretary Frazer Provides a Good Card for the Opening at Woodbine Today. Toronto. Out.. May 17.— The spring meeting of the Ontario Jockey club will begin . .ntori .. Owl unless there is a sudden change the weather Conditions will net be at all favorable. The cold, raw-wind and wintry weather, due to a backward spring, is aot calculated to make outdoor sport enjoyable. Secretary Frazer lias provided an excellent, card for the opening, the feature of which is Hie annual running of the Kings Plate, the premier fixture of racing on the Canadian turf. Fifteen eligibles are named to go in the race but J. F. Seagrams much touted Assemblyman is not one of then. This colt has all along been regarded as something out of the ordinary and was the general favorite for the race la future speculation. The stables dependence is said to be Sea Wall, a daughter of St. Serf, which has shown brilliant form in her recent work. Adam Becks Photographer has also shown brilliant work for the plate and is now a strong local favorite. This colt will have a large following and it would not be at all surprising if he was returned winner. An effort will be made to secure jockey Nicol to ride hiin, although it is understood that Mr. Seagram has second call on Nicol for the meeting. Wicklight. the best of the Kirkfield stable eutry, will be ridden by jockey Kunz. John P. Cavanagh, lessee of the betting privileges for the meeting, will not be here owing to his similar interests at Belmont Park. Instead, his right-hand man, Mart Mahoney. who arrived last night, will be on the ground collecting the half century per book for advance information. No difficulty is anticipated under the new system. Ill. authorities appear satisfied with the proposed method of operation and if the undesirables do not attempt to quote prices the betting problem will he as easy as before Jake Saunders was cited before Colonel Denison. This is the rub, however. It will be quite legal for any individual to take a bet. but not only will he be refused admission next day, but will most probably suffer prompt ejection. The Ontario Jockey Club officials are not worrying. They have received their price, and it is up to Cavanagh s representative if any trouble arises in that line. Both Crown Attorney Corley and Mr. Ritchie, solicitor to the Ontario Jockey Club are of the same opinion, that the betting machinery will run smoothly. W. E. Phillips, trainer for Fred Cook, is here. Jockey Nicol is expected to arrive from Louisville tomorrow. All of Cooks horses shipped in excellent condition and all are ready to run to their best form. R. W. Laggeroth, owner of Lord Boanerges and others in the stable of R. W. Walden, arrived here from New York this uiorning. J. B. Olio, a two. ear old brown colt, by Ormieant — Anne Couyers, owned by Heolgo Bene, also died this morning. The youngster tis.k sick while being shipped here from Louisville.
