UNEARTH A COLORED CONFEDERACY. Oakland Stewards Rule Off a Negro Owner Attempting to Emulate Little Pete. Oakland. Cal.. May 17.--Presiding Steward F. . Hopper announced at the close oi todays racing that owner 1. D. Lee. a colored man. had been rated off the local track for tampering with jockeys. It s.cins that Lee confined his attention alniosf exclusively to negro riders of whom .1. Hunter and II. Smith were conspicuous examples. The stewards vera able to get at the facts in the recent unsavory turf scandal by promising immunity to A. Williams, another colored jtvckey.who furnished full details of the crooked horsemans operations. The evidence was complete as far as It went, but failed to establish the identity of he men higher up. It was given out first that a couple of bookmakers were involved. Nothing developed on those lines, and the incident is considered closed. The name of Leroy Williams, the colored jockey now riding on metro politan tracks, cropped up several times during the investigation. Koy Offutts lightweight jockey C. Boss will not be seen any more in the saddle at the Kmeryville track. No official ruling has been made against him. He has simply been told not to accept any mounts for the present. The stewards got busy after the finish of the last race. .Io.-ke.vs Fischer and Aubiichon were fined 00 and 0 respectively for "herding." as they put it. the defeated favorite. Joe Coyne, during the running. Jockey Ialms also got a weeks suspeii si. .n for rough riding. Outsiders swept the card. The racing was excellent, the crowd was big and weather and track conditions first class. Tomorrow will l e Fabiol.i benefit day. Everybody will have to pay admission. It is an annual affair and nets many thousands of dollars to a deserving charity. An excellent card is offered for tomorrow afternoon and. with so many good horses as Head Dance. Salable. Santa Bay; Andrew Mack, Nothing, Gal-vestonian; Ray, Adonis. Little Joker; Native Son, fireball. Ocean Shore; Reservation, Cabin. Bragg; fleam.
