CHARLIE GILBERTS CANADIAN DERBY Valley Farm Colt Wins Feature of the Opening Day at Fort Erie. RulTalo, N. Y., July 22 Charlie Gilbert, carrying the colors of the Valley Farm Stable and ridden by J. Kelly, won the Canadian Derby, the feature of the opening of the midsummer meeting at Fort Erie this afternoon. There were nine starters and Charlie Gilbert ran coupled with Denham and Kelpie. Ellicott, winner of the RulTalo Derby, was the public choice and was heavily backed. He was riden by Nicol, ran prominently for the first mile, then dropped back beaten. The race was run before a large gathering and over a track that was as hard as Hint. Charlie Gilbert was well ridden. Kelly followed the early pacemaker closely, keeping up with the leaders until well down the backstretch. On the far turn he made his move and Charlie Gilbert -responded with a great burst of speed that soon placed him in the lead. Through the stretch he easily drew away from Cave Ailsum. The latter ran a remarkable race under a bad ride. I.ee got Cave Adsum away well, but when Hearing the far turn, he suddenly took his mount back, lie was on the inside and probably feared that he would be cut olT and pocketed. When Lee next made his move he took his mount to the outside going wide on the turn into the homestretch. When straightened out Cave Adsum responded with great courage and at the sixteenth post it seemed he might beat the winner. However, in the final drive he was unable to Improve his position. Tourcnne was third, beaten off live lengths. Then followed the tired Ellicott. Hi; came back to the stand limping and this was probably responsible for his defeat. The race has a guaranteed value of ,000. The winners portion of which was . ISO. The tabled history of the Canadian Derby is given below: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. 1S9S Miss Gussie In! Petulant was the only winning favorite and her victory in a measure made amends for the breaking down of G. C. Rennctts good mare Dishabille in the first race. Refore they had gone a furlong. Dishabille broke down badly and was pulled up. Mr. Reunett says the mare has run her last race. She will be sent to his farm near Memphis, to be bred to Intrusive or Abe Frank. The steeplechase proved an easy tiling for the Latouia juniper Saul. Hi; won in a canter from the favorite Manzano. Lavatrina, at odds of 40 to 1, won the second race, while Laura Clay showed a clean "pair of heels to her opponents in the opening race. it is almost certain that the Fort Erie meeting will be extended two weeks over the thirty-eight days originally scheduled. Seven of J. R. Respess sixteen horses, which arrived from Latouia yesterday, were sick when they came off the cars.
