SMITH MAY TRAIN FOR BUTLER. New York. September 17. .lames Butler, promoter of the recent Yonkers meeting, intends to collect a stable for racing next year. He is said to have olfeivd the position of trainer to T. P. Hayes, who is said to have declined and suggested John I. Smith, of Ixinglon. Ky.. as a good man for the place. Smith trained for bis brother-in-law, the late Byron McClelland, at times, as well as for others and himself, having at one time and another charge of such well known good ones as Bardolpli, Maclvor, His Lordship. Jack Rattlin. June Gavle. King Leif, Macco, Lillian Bell and Ways and Means. It may be said that T. P. Hayes denies that any olfcr was ever made to him by Butler.
