WALTER MILLER NOW AT OAKLAND. Crack Jockey Surprises the Multitude by His Appearance and Is Cheered. Oakland, Cal., November 21. Walter Miller rami! in on this mornings belated overland limited from New York and immediately proceeded to the track, where be arrived in time to secure mounts on San Gil, Phalanx and Burning Bush. The champion jockeys best efforts could not quite land the first two, both of which were tremendously backed favorites, hut he wound up with an inspiring victory on the least fancied and longest-priced one of the trio. Burning Bush, notwithstanding that he had to declare live pounds overweight in order to ride her. Tin: appearance of Thomas II. Waller .Millers riding was the outstanding feature, despite the fact that his moments of triumph and subsequent ovation came somewhat late and lost its force in the waiting. Barney Schreibers light of other days, Picquart, broke down hopelessly in his race and was with dilllculty led off the track. C. II. Pettingill, Packy Ryan, William Cahill and Ed Purser arrived from the east today. Horace Egbert, who is gradually recovering his health, took his place as clerk of the course and handicapper. Martin Nathansoii, who has been acting as associate judge in the absence of Pettingill, assumed a new position as steward and held forth in a pagoda of his own across the track and adjacent to the timers stand. A claim of foul was lodged against Miss Rlllie, the winner of the last race, by the jockey on Bye Bye II., but was not allowed. The Trotter horse was put out of commission by being crowded out by the leaders when nearing the finish. The jockey also lost his stirrup leather. Jockey Horner, who arrived Tuesday night, is under contract for the California winter season to. W. B. Jennings. W. M. Rogers arrived Wednesday. The good three-year-old, Johnny Lyons, by Sain La Rella, is an exact counterpart, but on a smaller scale, of the famous ciip horse, Nealon. The Jockey Club rule of charging 0 for per-ruislson to lead a starter to the post has been adopted here. Al LIndley on Wednesday was the first one to nay for the privilege.
