CALIFORNIA STAKES TO CLOSE. Two important stakes will close for nominations at midnight of December 31 that should appeal to the self interest of all breeders. They are new stakes that will in time rank high in tbe list of annual fixtures, it fostered by those who should foster them. They are the California Joekcy Clubs Futurity of 1909, for foals of 1907 and the Futurity of 1910, for entries of mares. Nothing helps more to sell a .well-bred and good looking yearling than nominations to rich produce stakes and the more intelligent and progressive breeders are well aware of this, act accordingly and cap the proper reward of their enterprise when they market their yearlings. Now here is a case where it is manifest that nominations from breeders arc needed to build up two great new stakes, that once well established", will contribute to largely enhance the selling value of every eligible youngster. In establishing such events, President Williams deserves the support of the breeders, such stakes being more immediately in their interest than in that of any other class.. Not all breeders, but the majority, have been accused of being selfish and disposed to wait for the apples that other people knock down, but here is a case for action from selfishness, if for not better reason.
