January 10. — Bright summer weather brought out an unusually large crowd to I witness the decision of the poor Friday offering by i secretary L. C. Smith. The card was featureless. ■ the only promise of a good race being in the fourth. James Curl, who has been playing In hard luck I at the mooting, finally seeetd with Giovanni Balerio. which just lasted long enough. The track was lightning fast and the time uniformly good. A close finish marked the result of the first race i which Giovanni Balerio wou after being brought to a sharp drive in the stretch by the elosing challenge of Alma Boy. The latter made a great stretch run and would have won in another stride. Master I. ste;- finished a close third, heads separating the three horses as they passed under the wire. Knbiuon. the favorite, held at a short price, ran a jioor race. Scarfeil led throughout in the second race and finished an tasy winner. Miutia followed him closely for the first half and then tiled badly. Lady Chiswoll defeated the favorite. B« llinence. in the third race after being outpaced in the early running. Belluionce finished fast and gamely, but was not good enough to beat the winner. Crepps Beck.i.iiu was a sharp contender lo the stretch where he ti/ed badly and barely saved third place from the fast coming and long priced Ten Bow. Waterbury came back to the races today after his dead heat with Rapid Water yesterday and carried top weight in the handicap, which was fourth on the card. Preen, from the Schreiber Stable, and Money Muss had. each 116 pounds, while the latters stable mate, Creston. carried 111 pounds. and won easily from the heavier weighted and older horses. Ctestaa followed Preen closely for the first three furlongs and then went to the front with a rush and was never in danger of defeat thereafter. Ireen finishing second and Waterbury third. The latter- mot with interference at the start, which threw him out of his stride, but was coming like a shot at the end. The Owners Handicap, carded as the third race tomorrow, has four of the fastest horses at the track in its list, and an effort will be made to break the American record for a mile. All of the starters are in with light weight and the oirtcome of the race from a time standpoint is being discussed with much interest tonight.
