1 1 I ; i i 1 I I i i i . i I MILLER REGAINING FAVOR. VICTORIES ON COLONEL WARWICK AND 0VE-LAND0 PLEASE FICKLE OAKLAND CROWD. Blanche C. Scores in Her Best Style — Smiley Cor-bett aa Easy Winner — Trainer Polk on Anxious Seat. i Oakland. Cal.. January 10.— J. S. Hawkins g 1 four-year-old Ovelando. made his re-api earauee at Oakland to-day. after a mouths let up and made good in the closing race under Walter Millers good riding, with such convincing ease from Bill Mayham as to confirm the opinion formed at the time of his previous effort, when a beaten prohibitive odds-on favorite. This was the heaviest betting race of the day and had engaged horses of fairly good class. The rotnainder of the card, with the exception of Smiley Corbett. winner of the second race, was devoted to animals of the most ordinary description. Walter Millers excellent saddle work with Colonel Warwick in the fourth and Ovelando in the last helped materially to maintain a good average of wins for the favorites. It was due to him that public choices held their own and shared equally with tin outsiders in the afternoons racing honors. A unique demonstration, even on a race course, occurred during the afternoon. Simultaneously with the appearance of jockey Fischer, astride of Charlie Doherty in the second race, a chorus of hisses emanated from the grandstand. Fischer was ruled off by the local stewards last spring and his subsequent reinstatement caused diss-atisfactiou among many of the local racegoers. The investigation into the running of the first race on January s. is still going on. Blanche c.s forward running today in the most difficult of going effectually disposes of Stuart Polks excuse for her defeat when tin odds-on favorite on Now Years day that she could not perforin well except on a sloppy track. Each succeeding race of Blanche C.s in another mans colors has confirmed public opinion with respect to the methods employed with her on January 1. and also strengthens the belief that Genimell, also trained by Polk, was absolutely unfit wheu a beaten off favorite January 4. The attendance continues undiminished despite the very deceptive track conditions. William Dubois has wired Paddy Lynch, uncle and guardian of jocke- Kddie Lynch, an offer of tS,4M retainer for first call on the crack lightweights services for the coming eastern season, with an additional %£7 for winning and 0 for losing mounts. •
