! HORSES IN PLENTY FOR TAMPA RACING. New Orleans. La.. January 14. — The shipment of horses for the two weeks race meeting which will be held at Tampa. Fla.. next month in connection with the Florida Mid-Winter State Fair, has begun in earnest. Between M0 and 400 horses now raciLg at the local tracks are destined to go to Tampa before the end of the present month. Racing secretary Laurence of the Tampa meeting writes here that he has received a number of inquiries from owners wintering at Benning, Lexington and Memphis, and says that a few carloads of horses will come to Tampa from those places. While the program of the meeting is for only two weeks a tentative arrangement has been made to extend the meeting several weeks. The definite announcement lias been made that only horses and owners in good standing at the two big tracks here will be permitted to participate at Tampa. Racing secretary Laurence is preparing to put on a race each day of the meeting for two-year-olds, and it is also proposed to have a number of hurdle races for the jumpers which are expected at the track. It is the intention of the management to foster the sport along the lines pursued by the leading tracks of the country, and it is confidently expected to give one of the best meetings ever held on a half-mile track. Fred Cook says he may not ship either Johnnie Blake or Lawrence P. Daley to New Orleans for the Derbys. Cook is also reported as saying that he has two colts at Nashville which are better than either of his Derby eligibles. The colts he believes will make better three-year-olds are E. and Whittaker. a bay colt by Ben Strome — Daisy Chain. and C. A. Tilles. bay colt, by Ben Strome — Marie Shanklin. Cook expects to run his horses on the eastern tracks exclusively next spring, with the exception of those which he wants to sell. They will he raced on the Canadian circuit by Frank Rector until sold. Much interest is beginning to develop in the two Derbys to be run here during the month of March. and the three-year-olds likely to start are already being sorted out by classes.
