RUBRIC WINS THE VENTURA HANDICAP. Rifleman Fails Dismally — Tony Faust Runs Mile in Fast Time — Blameless Repeats. Los Angeles. Cal.. February S.— Millers skillful jixkeyship brought Rubric home an easy winner in ihe Ventura Handicap today. The field consisted of all the best horses in training here. Rifleman, the well -backed favorite, showed noth ing. was dull of speed and never gave his admirers the slightest hope. Rubric was well supported by Millers followers, and his victory was greeted with vociferous applause. As is usual hi such race- Ihe winners neck was wreathed with a beautiful horseshoe. Secretary K. C. Smith offered an entertaining card and the consequence was a big crowd. The public hail much the best of the bookmakers. The latter have had «a tough road to travel tlii week. Today was cut in day. twenty-one books taktaof stands. Blameless left the post slowly in the start for the second race, but easily overtook Red Mimic in the las, sixteenth and was going away at the end. Red Mimic showed the most early speed and Iind fast in the closing drive, but wis second best. Tony Faust was the second winning favorite to -core and Ihe second winning mount for jockey Shilling. The Sain coll was hard held in the early running and close to the pacemaking Amunds u until passing into ihe homestretch, where he quickly iverhauled the leailwr. winning going away. F.d Hall finished well in a long stretch drive and would have heen second in another stride. Rifleman .was regarded as having the Vciituiv Handicap, which featured the card, at his mercy and was accordingly hacked to the exclusion of everything else in the race. His showing as i-om-pared with his race a week ago was very dis appointing. He ran as if stale and unable to raise i respectable gallop. Oeorge S. Davis, as usual, set the early pace, but gave way, tiring badly it the end of seven furlongs. Rubric, the winner, was reserved in the early part of the race , nut finished witli a great hurst of speed when called on. and Miller was easing him up at the end. The finish of the five horses behind the winner was close. Early Tide running secondV and Frank /"littner third. Chalfoule led all the way in the running of the fifth race and finished an easy winner over Uncle Henry and Alma Boy. Pontotoc was a disappointing favorite in the sixth •ice. which went to the outsider. Associate, by a head.
