Mandator, an added starter, stepped into a hole at the start and was eliminated when lie fell. Clamor stripped sore and palpably unfit and Jack Keenes second string. Asid ■ from the stake feature cheap class horses were engaged in the different races and Ihe results were unsalisfai lory from a speculative standpoint. Two other favorites scored. May Amelia and Shenandoah, the last-named at oilds-on, was successful, and he got home fjy a narrow margiu from Fthel Abbott, which was quoted at one time at 250 to 1 to win and as goxl as 00 to 1 place. Slienandoah ran in the colors of Harry Stover, his new owner, and the Longstreet horses sudden and inexplicable lapse from his very recent good form created a sensation among race-goers. The track was positively at its worst today of the drying out spots variety, and full of boles. Enthusiastic applause was forthcoming for Frauk Kelly, an old California jockey idol, when he won with May Amelia in the third race. This former great rider showed all of his time skill in lie saddle with the Baunockburn filly. Kelly is considering several good foreign offers and will probably ride in France next season. The threatening weather had a deterrent effect on the attendance this afternoon, not more than S.000 persons being present. Thirty-nine books drew for positions in ihe bi-_-ting at todays cut in. The stewards ate investigate a big turf scandal which implicates Mose Goldblatt and bookmaker F. F. Preston. Presiding steward E. C. Hopper, when asked about the matter, replied that he hadd nothing to say. From unoflicial source conies the allegation that bookmaker Prestons name was crossed out on tixlays list of ring operators. This is in effect to say he was debarred from making b«x k here. Charles Bowman, another bookmaker, claims to have been double-crossed by Mose Goldblatt on the MariM of Keep Moviugs first appearance on the local track. Goldblatt is alleged to have urged Bowman to wager heavily on his filly in the Oaks Preliminary, in which she was badly beaten. Bowman, it is said, sent an agent of his to investigate into Keep Mov-ings bad race, who reported that she ran in heavy sImxs. Bowman retaliated by bidding up and buying Belmere out of a selling race February 3. Immediately after Bowman says he was approached by Preston, on behalf of Goldblatt, and urged to return the horse for the price he had paid for him, promising substantial returns in the shape of booking privileges and laying against Belmere. which would be beaten in his very next start. Bowman says lie refused to entertain the proposition and put the whole thing up to the stewards.
