ENGLISH TURF AFFAIRS OF INTEREST. S Weights for the Important Spring Handicaps Made C Public — Death of a Noted Breeder. London, February 1. — Weights for the big spring handicaps are out and tin ir appearance has stirred I followers of the turf into activity. Coming first S for decision the Lincolnshire and Grand National are 1 naturally loreniost as topics of diseiission. Willi $ 12S pounds Mr. Sol Joels Eider is top weight for t the Lincolnshire. Dean Swift. 124 and Land League, n 122 coining next in order. The bottom weights ar. I Mr. 15. Elains General Sto ssel. Mr. .1. Ingleby"s Hyzlar and Mr. A. M. Simons Chaudon, the first J named a four-year-old. the other two three-year-olds [ and all assigned the feather weight of eigiit.v-foiir I pounds. The Grand National has Aseeties Silver . as its topw .ight at 171 pounds, l.eiusler. 104. Krk .] J. land, 105 and Mount Prospects Fortune. 102. being 1 I next iu the handieappei s opinion. Honian Law. | 157. Drumeree. 154. Kanaueulus. 152. are horses that I have figured in eonneetiou with the big race for G J several years past. Mr. Foxhall Ke ncs Chorus has been assigned 145 ] ounds and bis Prophet III. I 14o pounds. His Majcstjs Flaxiiiun. au iutirin J horse, is assigned tlie light impost of 138 pounds. It is too early for siieculation. but it will not be I long before odds will be forthcoming on both events , and a market of some sort established. i That veteran breeder. Mr. James Suarry. ale! • being long in bad health, died on Tuesday niglil. . January 2S. at Malton, having r ached the age of .; eighty-two. His faiher was stud groom to the late I Sir Tatton Sykes. and the brood mare Polly Agnes. given by that gentleman lo old Snarry. proved a | veritable gold mine to Ixith father and sou. The J latter bred an Oaks winn r in I/Ahbeene de Jou- ! arre. and an even better animal the following year. I Ibis being Martagon. ISoth were bred by Mr. Snarry at Marramat. near Slediuere. Mr IKviglav H lad gave 2.S0O guineas for Martagon as a yearling. whereas Lord Dunraven and Lord Katulolph thurehill. who jointly owned l.Abbesse de Jourarre. paid only BM guineas for her at Ihe same age. In September. 1S.8S. Mr. Suariy bought Musley Bank. and the beet animal he bred there was Orchid, a horse of brilliant speed. In 1895 Mr. Snarry had n great sale at Doneaster. Hampton Wick fetching :;.i;oO guineas, and four other yearlings 2.010 guineas, an average of 1.122 guineas apiece, but all of them turned out commoners as regards racing. Fifty years ago the stallions to win 0,000 or more on the Hat during the season were Melbourne. 1.O30: Orlando. 4. ".55: Birdcateher. S51,040: ] Touchstone. S.O!5: The Flying Dutchman. 1 13.11. Voltigeur. 3.03O: Faiigii-a-Ballagh. S 70: Alarm. HUH; Fla tea teller. 1.V0: Collingwood. 0,055. . Chanticleer. 0,015; Surplici, o.025. and Annan dale. 0,020. How few of these are represented iu the male line now. as mi reference to our list of winning sires for 1907 I find them thus: Bird catcher with sixty-eight descendants, Voltigeur with forty five. Toiiehstone with twenty-five. Melbourne willi six. The Flying Dutchman with two and Orlando with one. The last-named was for years one of the most successful sires in Kngland; now h? has hardly a male descendant in this country. His Majesty has named four yearlings as fol lows: Chestnut filly by Persimmon out of Medora, Permia: bay filly by Persimmon out of Iax-1i Dixui. Perla: chestnut filly by Diamond Jubilee out of Amphith-atie. Daniia. and bay colt by Persimmon out of While Lilae. Border Prince. The famous Australian mare. Wakeful, last back-end foaled a colt to Wallace. The youngster is very closely inbred, his sire being by Carbine son of Musket I. and his dam by Trenton also a son of Musket ». Subsequently Wakeful was mated with Positauo sire of Poseidon, etc.. this being tlie siieeessful cross of St. Simon on Musket, aud the produce should probably be a more successful racehorVso than his elder half-brother, although the latter will no doubt stay well.
