His only de-feat as a two year-old came in his n«l and last race of that year. This was in the Matron Stakes al Metrris Park October 2. Bar-ing the rac-e pracfie-ally won his rider, Spem er. — 1 became careless and was easing his mount np • prematurely when Biillman brought Beau Gallant up W a sudden rush and before Spencer could rally Commando, won the race by a half length. The Parader was third and seven others ran unplaced. The race was run over the straight threc-ciUMrt.-i-s of the Eclipse course in 1:10L The result created great adverse criticism and Spencers i deeaelenu- as one of the gre-atest riders of that time dated from that day. Commandos racing care, r did not extend beyond | his thre-e-y ear-old performances, and at that age : he ran but three times. His fii!»t start in 1001 was in the Belmont Slakes at Morris Park. May 2.!. a I a mile and three-eighths. His only opponents were The Parader ami All Creen. All carried 120 pounds, and Commando won in a canter from Tlve Parader in 2:21. At Gravesontl. June 1. he won the Carlton Stakes at a mile in l:o0». Blues was his only c-ompe-titor. and. gooel horse as Blues was. Commando carried 12 ! |M unds to his 111 and won under a pull. His last rac-e was for the Lawrence Realization at Sheepshe-ael Bay July 4. Commando was a lame horse before the race and I although he struggled on gamely he had to submit to The Parader iu a fast-run race, being beaten two lengths in 2:10*. Mortallo was a bad third. It being apparent that he was practically broken 1 down, the good colt was sent to Castleton and went into the stud in 1002. Here he died untimely March 13, flMt, but not until he had given to the American turf ornaments of surpassing greatness, and in such stars as Colin. Peter Pan, Superman.
